How to retrieve deleted PST filesPosted: June 4, 2012
My PST file has been accidentally deleted from my hard drive. It had lots of important information that I would like to get it back. Is there any way to retrieve deleted PST file from my computer?
Microsoft Outlook uses PST file to store emails, contacts, notes, calendars and all other attribute of Outlook. The default location of PST file is local hard disk of your computer i.e. C drive. Outlook also uses folders to organize data but these folders are not same as your file system folders. Rather than existing individually on your computer’s hard drive, these folders exist within the Outlook’s file structure i.e. PST file and you can create multiple PST files to store Outlook data. File deletion is a common scenario which end up in losing important data. The deleted file recovery is relatively very easy but, you just need to know the exact cause for deletion of PST file.
- Have you accidentally formatted the drive where the PST file was located?
You can install multiple Operating Systems on same hard disk by partitioning it. While installing second Operating System, you might have accidentally formatted the partition where PST file was located instead of formatting other empty partition.
Formatting the drive deletes each and every file stored on it and then creates new file structure to organize and manage new data. Therefore, accidental formatting of hard drive may results in deletion of PST file. You can recover deleted PST file from formatted partition using relevant file recovery software
- Accidentally deleted PST file using context menu or Shift+Del keys?
If you have deleted PST file using context menu then check the Recycle Bin to restore the deleted PST file. If you find deleted PST file in Recycle Bin then restore it from Recycle Bin. If the size of your deleted PST file is larger than the Recycle Bin size then you may not find it in Recycle Bin. Because, if the deleted file’s size is larger than the size of Recycle Bin then it bypasses the Recycle Bin instead of moving to it.
Similarly, when you delete PST file using Shift+Del keys, it does not move to Recycle Bin instead it bypasses the Recycle Bin resulting in loss of file. Therefore, the files that are deleted using Shift+Del keys cannot be restored from Recycle Bin. Fortunately, there is another simple way to get back your deleted PST file i.e. by using file recovery tool.
- Virus attack causes deletion of files
Virus attack is one of the most common problem, which leads to loss of files. Viruses are destructive programs which are designed to destroy the files. Some viruses can also delete the files when they are executed resulting in loss of files. The best way to avoid virus attack is to use updated antivirus programs.
You can use third party recovery tools to recover deleted files but before using any file recovery tool, make sure that you have not saved or copied any new data after deletion of files from the disk. When you delete files from the hard drive, they are not permanently deleted, only allocation info of files is deleted. The files remain on the hard dive until they are overwritten by new files. If you save any files on that drive then the new data may overwrites the already existing data resulting in permanent loss of files.
